Throwing clay with a Throwdown Star

Without a doubt, the most wonderful people make pottery! We arrived at a quaint cottage in the park, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, where we were welcomed by a kind group of students and an even kinder set of instructors.

We sat down in the warm studio and after an introduction to the basics of ceramics we got stuck in and started our masterpieces. We made our pots and vases using the same coiling techniques that the ancient Greeks used to create their stunning amphorae used to store wine and olive oil.

Our teacher Nam,  star of The Great Pottery Throw Down, is an excellent craftsman and an expert in all things clay. He spoke of different types of clays and their characteristics. He even explained the behaviour of London clay he’d dug up himself!

After the coiling technique, we moved on to the wheel. As Nam explained the intricate process of throwing, the firm grip and the delicate touch, a beautiful bowl sprouted from his hands.

As we were exposed to the exquisite intricacies of pottery, we created beautiful sculpture and were inspired by art.

Nam kept our masterpieces to put in the kiln and I can’t wait to go pick them up to take home!
